Meet the Publisher
Will Standley has spent about half of his
professional life in engineering and the other half in publishing,
broadcasting, and the media. And for the past 30 years, he has enjoyed both
sailing and power boating.
His first boat was a 20-foot sail boat on
Lake Lanier, a large, deep water lake northeast of Atlanta. There he
learned to sail and to endure the joys of boating. Why, you could ride on
them, fish off them, weekend on them, go places on them, swim off them,
and just hang out on them, not to mention work on them! What else could
offer one so much while totally immersing you in nature's beautiful embrace?
Moving up to a Morgan 27, he later learned
to enjoy sailboat racing as well as cruising. It was on this boat, the
Phoenix, that he introduced his yet-to-be wife Susan to the experience of
boating. On a cold and blustery winter day, they cleared the point at Aqualand
Marina with only the head-sail up, a sturdy 130 ginny. There,
the unfettered wind immediately put the windows of the small vessel
almost in the water. But the Phoenix, right on cue, hardened up and did her
duty
like a ballerina, balancing herself gracefully on a single delicate toe.
But the Phoenix was not just a talented and beautiful artist; she was
also a top performing athlete, illustrating her power as when challenged
by the breeze
in a start, she leapt ahead, charging hell-bent for the far horizon, careening
through the chop, painting the sky with translucent spray fleeing upwards
and outwards from her bow as she sliced through the hypothermia-enabled lake
waters, taking them all for an exhilarating and unforgettable afternoon
ride. Later, with ice on the decks, they returned to the marina and their
boat slip. Susan, bones cold and body boat tired, was beaming with an enormous
smile on her face. To this day she still enjoys the entire experience and
adventure of boating as much as Will. So Will, among other things, is one
lucky guy!
Chartering a Morgan 41 in Miami and sailing
to Freeport, the Berries, and Bimini on a two-week vacation made Lake
Lanier seem small for both Will and Susan.
In 1980 they moved to east central Florida,
just a few miles from Cocoa Beach and the Kennedy Space Center, and right
by the beautiful Indian River Lagoon, a part of the Intracoastal Waterway.
Having owned many boats over the years,
Will and Susan currently have a 53' trawler. He and his wife cruise
Contessa on holidays and vacation up and down the east coast of Florida. |
